Jennifer O’Brien – Mad Hatter Millinery

Milliner Jennifer O’Brien was born in Bingara, NSW on the Gwydir River. As a child she spent endless hours making and designing outfits for her dolls. Later as a teenager, she created her own wardrobe with the same passion and skill. Hats were a part of Jennifer’s attire from an early age and secretly she harboured a desire to be a milliner when she ‘grew up’ … not solely because it sounded exotic!

Time intervened and a lot happened upon leaving Bingara: study, travel, work, parenthood, more study! Now, operating from her studio in the inner-Newcastle suburb of Adamstown, Jennifer’s business Mad Hatter Millinery delivers custom-made headwear for women and men. Jennifer has studied millinery in Newcastle and Sydney and she is always on the look-out for new techniques and ideas.,

Her background in fine arts and visual arts also bears influence on her sculptural creations. Her first love of colour and form definitely found their perfect home in millinery.

Not only does Jennifer create hats but she also refurbishes and up-cycles old ones. Markets and op shops supplement her studio supplies and her choice of materials is many and varied. You can find vintage mixed with new but ultimately all creations display her penchant for natural fibres.

Jennifer’s service also includes the repair, cleaning, stretching and re-blocking of hats for her customers and she is quite happy to give advice on how to re-vamp and repair your own headwear.

Consultations prior to ordering may take place in Jennifer’s studio or through her online service. Face shape and body-type influence the style of a custom-made headpiece and Jennifer is careful to craft headwear that will suit your individual need.
