Justin Montefiore

Justin Montefiore is a musical instrument builder, sculptor, musician, composer, instrument innovator, community choir director and was a Waldorf class/music teacher for 14 years. His inspiration for instrument making comes from a deep love of music, life and people, and observations of nature.

He has a music degree specialising in ethnomusicology and composition, has completed an apprenticeship with a world-renowned luthier Peter Biffin and has a passion for performing, composing and teaching music.

As a luthier, Justin has a unique combination of skills. His ability for form and design as a sculptor ensures that every instrument is a work of art. His work in performing, composition, music teaching and ethnomusicology ensures that each instrument has a sound that is of the best quality and suited to a wide range of styles and musics.

Aesthetically Justin describes his guitars as ‘spartan beauty’.
‘Everything you put on the timber of a guitar will alter the sound to some extent, I use sculpting and inlay not only for a little decoration but to enhance the acoustics of the instrument.’
