Kerri Smith
When considering the practice of making art Kerri’s chief motivation is to express herself through the experimentation of materials. The freedom with which mark making is part of her practice has encouraged her to draw from the subconscious and hence create artwork that expresses the human existence through what she observes.
Her work has been influenced by the observation of the unique character of individuals and their environment. Catching the nuances of daily life provides a rich source of material. To scrutinize the way in which a character is influenced and decorated by popular culture holds a strong focus in dealing with subject matter.
Drawing features strongly in her art through gesture and contour. There is realism in her art with the liberty to improvise and play with marks as the artwork evolves.
Kerri has exhibited in various group exhibitions including Small held annually at Back to Back Galleries. She has been a finalist in the Newcastle Emerging Artist prize and had her work selected for Lethbridge 10000 Prize QLD 2011 and Casella Art Prize 2011 Griffith Regional Gallery. She has won the Works on paper section at The Weston Art Show 2011.
Her first solo exhibition at Truevision Gallery Redhead was held in October 2012. She continues to enter various art prizes and is working towards another solo exhibition later in 2013.
