Calling all local artists for public art project in Lake Macquarie

Artists are invited for a public art project for the soon-to-be-built Charlestown Skate Park on Corner of Pacific Highway and Frederick Street, Charlestown. The project is open to artists or arts collectives across Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Region and Central Coast.

Council’s Manager Cultural Services, Jacqui Hemsley, said these are important projects as the artworks connect young people to our community and will play a role in encouraging a sense of place for Charlestown.

“We’re seeking three diverse design proposals for small, medium and large artwork commissions to help bring more life to the skate park,” Ms Hemsley said.

“While Charlestown has an industrial history, we are looking for the selected artists to meet with local young people to identify the themes and concepts to be used in the artworks. Other themes may include references to the Lake, water and our region’s strong Aboriginal cultural heritage.”

The project is open to artists or arts collectives across Lake Macquarie, the Hunter Region and Central Coast. The proposed location for the commissions is the corner of Pacific Highway and Frederick Street, Charlestown.

An information session will be held for interested artists at Charlestown Library, on Thursday 20 April from 5.30-6.30pm.

Download the Expressions of Interest details for the small commission ($4000), medium commission ($6000) and major project ($17,000).
