Youth Arts Queensland and its State Delivery Partners invite artists from across Australia to apply for the 2011 JUMP national mentoring program for young and emerging artists, with applications open today.

As Australia’s largest artist mentoring program, JUMP identifies and promotes excellence in artistic practice amongst artists aged 18 – 30, who are in the first five years of their professional practice.

Funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, JUMP supports artists in developing a one-on-one relationship with an industry leader of their choice, and working with them on a funded creative project.

The program also provides access to national industry networks, online profiling and professional development opportunities.

In their seventh exhibition together ceramic artists Heather Campbell, Anne Gazzard, Grant Keene, Susan Myerson, Joan Robinson, Denise Spalding and Anne Too have once again produced an impressive collection of ceramic work covering a broad range of form, style and function.

Work ranges from pieces inspired by the colours of the Australian landscape, the rich terracottas of the Tuscan countryside, and the earthy images of African animals, to delicate porcelain sculptures, ceramic depictions of the female form, platters impressed with floral motifs and pieces inspired by the bright colours of storybooks.

When clay is fired the artist produces an object that carries his/her “impressions” - be it a sculptural form or a slash of colour, it was impressed by the potter onto the clay.

In 2010 the ART BAZAAR Arts & Crafts Street Market celebrates its eighth year of operation. It is the premier opportunity for Hunter arts, craft and design practitioners and arts-related organisations to showcase their work.

Hunter Arts Network strives to promote professionalism and maintain the high standard of art works on offer at Art Bazaar, and encourage emerging Artists to take the opportunity to present their talent.

Over the last 7 years ART BAZAAR has become a highly anticipated event for both the public and the participating stallholders. It has stimulated the arts community and increased public awareness of the Hunter’s diverse artistic culture, successfully displaying the many individuals, groups, organisations and businesses.

The Market also represents an excellent opportunity for practitioners and organisations to develop professional networks which support the development of new work, broader audiences and marketing opportunities - all of which align directly with the objectives of HAN.

This is a tremendous opportunity for participants to market their work to a large audience at a time of year when this audience is really “in the mood” to buy!

All Stall-holders must be members of Hunter Arts Network ($50 individuals and $80 organisations). Applications will not be accepted from non-financial members. For information about joining the Hunter Arts Network and our membership form, visit our membership page.

Goods sold at ART BAZAAR are to be the original work of the Stall-holders and of a high standard. The primary focus of the Market is on Arts, Craft and Design work – not imported/re-sale goods – and we look for originality and innovation.

‘Red Lantern Night Market’ will be held in the centre of Newcastle this Nov 13th & 27th and Dec 11th. Stalls will include handmade artisan stalls, fair-trade goods, high quality imported merchants and a strong emerging artists section. Delicious food with an asian focus and other delectable treats.

There will be an operational rickshaw, music, dancing in the streets, street performers, gamelan orchestra and a shadow puppet performance. And more surprises on the evenings…

‘Livesites’ and ‘Renew Newcastle’ will participate in ‘Red Lantern Night Market’.

This workshop will cover the practice of keeping a sketch book journal. You will be inspired by the sketch books of many different artists and will have an opportunity to use a variety of sketching media including; charcoal, ink, graphite, coloured pencil and oil pastel.

We will focus on two main areas; sketching and composition with a session on each of the following subjects:

• Composition - learn how to create interesting page layouts, creative backgrounds and use lettering in imaginative ways.
• Landscapes - sketching outside as well as from your own photographic reference this will include some easy to apply perspective hints.
• Sketching - fast gestural drawing from life including things that won’t keep still.
• People and portraits - simple figures to add life to your sketches, byo a photo to create a short portrait study.
• Mixed media - make a themed mixed media artwork that can be cut into smaller miniature pictures (also suitable to use as artist trading cards).

Cost: $80 included all artist quality paper and materials, optional - byo sketch book
