A two day workshop on traditional and modern etching techniques using zinc plates and copper sulphate. Participants will learn how to prepare their plates, apply grounds, transfer a drawing, achieve tone using spray paint as an aquatint and experiment with stencils. By the end of the course everyone should have created a zinc plate with an image and have printed it intaglio ready for framing. Some materials will be provided.

In this 10 week hands-on course for beginners students will be introduced to some of the many varied and exciting techniques of printmaking. Through practical exercises students will be guided to create artworks using a wide range of both intaglio and relief prints using etching presses at the Newcastle Printmakers Workshop. Some techniques covered will include monoprints, drypoints, collographs, and carborundum as well as chine colle. Students will be encouraged to experiment with and develop many variations and combinations within these techniques as well as feel competent working in a printmaking studio. Come along to this small and relaxed class to explore your creativity in print.
Course notes and materials list will be provided by the tutors throughout the course. Some materials will be provided.

This 10 week course is perfect for beginners or the more experienced printmaker wanting to get back into this exciting media. In this hands on workshop you will make learn to make prints using a variety of techniques including monoprints, drypoint, lino block, collagraph, chine colle, and stencilling. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with combining different methods. Some simple silkscreen and etching on aluminium can also be explored depending on the interests of the group.
In the first week bring along a pencil (2B is a good all rounder), pen, drawing/ideas book, favorite t-bag, mug and snack. Wear old clothes and covered shoes. Any blank-paged book will do, and it doesn’t have to be new.
Estimated materials for each week, $2 – $5 depending on the technique, size and number of prints you create.

This hands on course is ideal for beginners, creatives wanting some fresh ideas or past print makers keen to get back into this exciting media. During the 10 weeks participants will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of techniques including monoprint, drypoint, lino block, carborundum, collograph and stencilling. Combining methods and printing multiple plates offer a plethora of possibilities. Etching on aluminium will be introduced in the later weeks of the course.
