AUSTRALIA’S finest news photography is on show at the Wallsend library.

Capturing moments of triumph and despair, the Nikon–Walkley Awards exhibition documents some of the biggest news stories of the past 12 months.

It includes the photo of the year for excellence in photojournalism, shot by Barat Ali Batoor, of asylum seekers emerging from below the decks on their boat bound for Australia.

Library public programs co-ordinator Carol Edmonds said news photographers told the story of the world around us.

‘‘The library is once again delighted to host this outstanding exhibition, which is one of our most popular events on the calendar,” she said.

The exhibition is on display until June 21 at the library, in Bunn Street, Wallsend.
