The inspiration for my prints came one morning while I was having breakfast at a place where I stay in Bali, drawings then progressed to the carving of plywood sheets back in my home studio at Stockton and after that the printing process began. This project has been ongoing for more than 18 months and the final prints on archival paper were made in collaboration with master printmaker Amanda Davies on her custom-made, extra long-bed press at her studio near Wollombi in the Hunter Valley. By using a vertical scroll format with no horizon line I have created a series that reflects my interest in S.E. Asian art especially the Rinpa tradition from Japan. As in Rinpa art my art is highly decorative and patterned with themes taken from nature and the seasons, it utilises stylised abstract forms and an emphasis on surface decoration. The title ‘Shadows on a Wall’ is a nod to the Greek philosopher Plato who questioned what is seen as real and what is not, what we know and what we don’t. The series of woodblock prints will be at Acrux Art Gallery, 123 Tudor St, Hamilton, Newcastle 2303 from 27 April until 14 May. The gallery is open Thurs–Sat 11-4 and Sun 11- 2. Gallery Director Nadia Aurisch can be contacted by mobile 0403159 342. Please join us for the opening celebration on Sat 29 April, 4-6.
