A study of earth and flame through pit-fired ceramics and photography by artists Sonya Estens, Nicole Fernance, Gillian Karpiel, Catherine Lee, Francoise McDonald, Brydie Piaf, Michelle Watts.
At the heart of Elemental is a group that has gathered around fire for many years. Making, practicing and experimenting with the process of pit-firing. Together, they surrender their forms to flame and return to uncover and admire the transformation.
Photographic works extend this dialogue, incorporating scorched ceramic forms into carefully composed still lifes. Re-imagining the fired objects beyond the roaring of flame to their quiet presence interacting with light and shadow.
Elemental is a collection of work presenting the evolution between ceramic form and atmosphere, surrender and camaraderie, and the evidence of the ephemeral transformed into textured memory.
