Hunter Arts Network Art Bazaar

Kathryn Charlesworth

My name is Kathryn Charlesworth and I was born and live in Newcastle. I am self taught and earlier years since I was young I worked mainly with oil painting for landscapes and some abstracts. This also included some screen printing of T-shirts and material with some sewing included. for most of my life I have worked in the legal industry and now with family commitments in the elderly sector I now work on a casual basis and contract via my sole trader ABN. This has enabled myself to establish a relationship with ConnectAbility Australia in their art sector for the past 5 years as a volunteer throughout the year and also with their Art Bazaar Stall. My first private Art Bazaar Stall was December 2014.

I am now employed with ConnectAbility Australia as an Art Facilitator wherein I deliver an art program to a dementia specific house at a Newcastle aged care facility. This program has proven very successful as it extends to printing cards with their pictures, placement in cookbooks and private framing for their rooms etc. Generally their art is not placed in a drawer. On a private level I have had extensive experience with severe dementia with a close relative and my knowledge has helped in delivering this program. Recently a Walk in My Shoes Competition was held by another aged care facility and my group placed an entry and amongst a lot of entries my group won 3rd Prize Trophy and was televised on NBN. This was very inclusive for my art group.

On 12 October 2016 I attended the Commonwealth Bank Fundraising Dinner for ConnectAbility Australia and I delivered a speech on the facilitating and outcomes I have observed from my art program.

Since having more time on my hands for the past 2 years have worked with textile art namely sewing and hemming muslin into scarves and then dying them with the Japanese Shibori methods. I also have an EBay store in which I paint rune stones – 5 different colours and also I stencil fabric print altar cloths which I cut and sew.

I have had experience with plant printing on cotton and linen tea towels and also sewing linen tea towels into placemats with further plant printing via ConnectAbility Australia. This year I am again having a private stall at the Lambton Park Art Bazaar and my items will consist of my Shibori scarves, printed tea towels and also spotted gum cheeseboards.

I also refine bees wax which is sold in EBay and for private orders pour bees wax candles, make body scrubs, face masks etc.

Art is an evolving process as with music in which I am also a musician – guitar, flute, keyboards and some songwriting and both mediums have so many identical processes and qualities.
