THOUSANDS of eager art fans nabbed creative Christmas presents at Newcastle’s Art Bazaar on Saturday.

More than 120 artists showcased and sold their works in Civic Park at the event, which Hunter Arts Network president Leah Fawthrop estimated drew about 10,000 patrons over six hours.

‘‘The park was full even before we started trading,’’ she said.

‘‘Even at 3pm when we were supposed to finish, we could have kept going.’’

The event included artists at work and musicians performing among the stalls.

Ms Fawthrop said the Art Bazaar’s success was thanks to Novocastrians’ appreciation of unique items on show there.

‘‘We are always changing and growing because there’s always emerging artists and people finding their inner artists [who want to exhibit,’’ she said.

‘‘We can put our work out there but it really needs the support of the community.

‘They showed that in droves.’’

Hunter Arts Network will run another bazaar in March at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.
