March 5th sees the opening of two exhibitions at Back to Back Galleries.

The Main Gallery exhibition Relics features the works of Alan Prowd and Dot Thompson, while the Gallery Shop exhibition Life isn’t Always Black and White is a ceramic award exhibition; the winners of which will be announced at the opening.

Relics – Alan Prowd and Dot Thompson

The term relic is often used casually; perhaps as an affectionate term for their old car or other possessions. In Relics Alan Prowd and Dot Thompson reflect on a broad spectrum of cultural, historic and biological relics. Dotʼs focus has always been on the detail of cultural attachment to objects and everyday ritual. While working as a young artist in Adelaide the National Gallery of Australia acquired the major part of her exhibition 12th Birthday Party, a ceramic installation of the food and accoutrements of a childhood celebration. In Relics she delves further into the minutiae of culture with delicate paintings of forgotten toys, clunky ceramic 70ʼs TV sets, and a heavenly tutu.

Alan Prowd widens the view to look at historic, even prehistoric relics. Remnants of stone age cave painting, worn standing stones, labyrinths and mazes, and even bones and corals become significant as relics – as solid memories alluded to in the brittle-solid-transparent-opaque medium of glass.

Please join us at the opening reception 6-8pm on Friday March 5th.

The exhibition will be open from 5th to 22nd March, 2010.
